Public Schools and Facebook:

* I originally wrote this back in September 2014 at the start of a new school year. But as I sat at my desk eating goldfish and a sandwhich I made at 5:30 this morning, with 12 minutes left before my students return from lunch, I felt the need to repost. Not because of my daily 27 minute packed lunch { I'm happy with it } but because I'm a teacher AND a parent. We need this reminder more than once a school year.

Facebook is not the place to voice your concerns about your child's school, or the staff that work there. It is a public social network. You can quickly turn your 'concerns' into a witch hunt and issue of cyber bullying. Yes, I understand that it is much easier to hide behind your phone/computer and bad mouth people  than to call them personally {or even go speak with them face to face}.
But once you have threatened, lied, spread rumors and given ultimatums via your Facebook page, it may be too late to expect a nice real person conversation.
No, don't be so quick to insult public schools.  Remember that the staff there are women and men who have CHOSEN this career because they love and want the best for our children. They do their very best every single day to love, nurture, teach, protect and prepare your child. If only you knew what these staff members and administrators and teachers actually have to see and do on a day to day basis; it is so much more than just teaching. Eight hours a day they are raising our children. They are working before and after school, on weekends, losing sleep over worrying about OUR children. Children come to school hungry, no change of clothes, no adult supervision at home, no LOVE at home. No school staff have a lot more to do than just teach.

Public schools are so valuable. So important for your child's preparation into the real world. Full of diversity, challenges, triumphs, fears and accomplishments; there is no better place to prepare your child for the REAL world than a public school. Just keep in mind what the teachers face every day; what your child faces every day. There are no income levels, no religious affiliations, or behavior criteria. Public schools welcome ALL children and therefore the teachers and administrators are there for ALL children. Do not compare this special job to one of a private school where only the higher income, smarter, certain religious kids are allowed to attend.

Without public educators and administrators where would YOUR child be today? Free public education is a right and a privilege that our great nation gives your children.  But if there was no one to work and lead these schools, what would you do? If anyone had any idea how DIFFICULT our federal government has made it for public educators, you would be shocked as to why they hadn't already changed jobs. How's your healthcare benefits? Public educators' premiums have more than TRIPLED in five years. It takes four years of college to get a teaching degree and then a certificate..... MOST of your child's teachers are still paying for their college loans.

No.  Just stop. Get off your Facebook rant, verbal bullying, gossip spreading high horse and step back.
Every person who works at public schools love and ACCEPT EVERY kind of child. And if your child attends public school, then your child has the advantage of experiencing the wonderful diversity of every different kind of child; poor, white, Hispanic, black, at risk and every thing God made. Not just the cloned elite. The real world.
Publics schooling will prepare your child for college and the career world if you will allow it. Stop taking up for your child, making excuses and 'saving' them everytime they make a mistake. College is already going to be harder for your child. But if your student is used to you getting your way by complaining and swooping in and saving them, then college is going to blow their minds. Professors don't care who you are or what little Billy's momma has to say.

But for now while your kid {and mine} are still in public schooling, remember their teachers; the school staff and the administrators and what they have to face everyday. Different parental views fighting for each of their children, different religious views; parents who are NO where to help, kids who struggle everyday. Remember YOUR CHILD attends a public school. They are BLESSED. They are at an ADVANTAGE. Why? Because they are exposed to everything the world has to offer every day. And the staff that is there to help and guide them are facing the same struggles. They could leave any day. They could find higher paying jobs; easier jobs. Corporate, private schools; anything. But they choose to stay with YOUR child. MY child.

Give them a break. Give your CHILD a break. Step back. Let life guide. And remember it's more effective to just do what teachers are trained to do; praise publicly and criticize privately.

Thank you.
